The Nordan Young Artist/Studio Art & Art Education Award

Application Deadline: January 31, 2017

The Nordan Young Artist/Studio Art & Art Education Award is open to entering freshman of superior talent in art with 12 or fewer semester hours of college level credit upon entry to the university. Selection is made by submission of an online application and portfolio. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be seeking a BFA degree and major in Art Education or Studio Art (Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture). The submitted portfolio should exhibit technical competence, formal understanding and personal creative expression. Applying students must submit 15 to 20 images of original works. At least 5 of these must be drawings exploring a single subject in real space (not from a photograph, reproduction or invention).

Applying for a Young Nordan Award

The scholarships are renewable for up to three academic years (a total of four years-worth of awards) of the student’s undergraduate program. Please read the guidelines carefully. Late or incomplete portfolios will not be processed.

Merit Scholarship Awards for Current TCU students

Application Deadline: January 31, 2017

Merit scholarships are for students who are currently enrolled at TCU or students who have transferred to TCU and are majoring in the Art Education, Graphic Design or Studio Art (Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture) BFA programs. Available scholarships include the Nordan Fine Arts, Emily Guthrie Smith, Fine Arts Guild, Carol Thornton and Samuel P. Ziegler. Scholarships will be awarded to the top BFA candidates presenting portfolio/works in the annual open competition. Selection is made by submission and presentation of a portfolio and a prepared artist statement (Studio Art). Late or incomplete portfolios will not be accepted.

Portfolio reviews for Merit Scholarships occur in the Spring.

Merit Scholarship Awards for Incoming Transfer Students

Application Deadline: January 31, 2017

Merit scholarships are available for students transferring to TCU and intending to pursue a BFA degree in Art Education or Studio Art (Ceramics, New Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture). Available scholarships include the Nordan Fine Arts, Emily Guthrie Smith, Fine Arts Guild, Carol Thornton and Samuel P. Ziegler. Scholarships will be awarded to the top BFA candidates presenting portfolio/works in the annual open competition. Selection is made by online submission of a portfolio and a prepared artist statement on Slideroom (see instructions below). Late or incomplete portfolios will not be accepted.

Renewal of Merit Scholarships

Application Deadline: January 31, 2017

For current scholarship holders of the Young Nordan, Nordan Scholar, Emily Guthrie Smith, Fine Arts Guild, Carol Thornton and Samuel P. Ziegler awards. Renewal is based on maintaining a 3.0 GPA in the area of the award and successfully meeting the University grade standards for non-probationary students and portfolio examination in subsequent years until the scholarship runs out. Late or incomplete portfolios will not be accepted.

Funding for Graduate Students in Art History

Graduate students in the art history program benefit from numerous funding opportunities. Each year, four to six applicants are awarded M.A. stipends (in addition to tuition waivers) of up to $10,000. Among these stipends are the prestigious Kimbell Fellowships. Grants for research travel are also available on a competitive basis from the Mary Jane and Robert Sunkel Art History Endowment. Recent Sunkel grants have funded graduate student travel to New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Paris, London, Florence, Rome, and Bologna.

Funding for Graduate Students in Studio Art

Graduate students in the studio art program benefit from numerous funding opportunities. Each year, four to six applicants are awarded tuition waivers and stipends of up to $10,000.
